Apple Buys Augmented-Reality Software

The fact that Apple might be interested in augmented-reality is no secret. Actually, the famous company has never tried to hide that, showing its interest through a series of moves.

One of the latest such moves was just revealed. Apple purchased a company that makes augmented-reality software, showing once again that the tech giant sees development potential in this technology.

The company purchased by Apple, Metaio, is a German company specialized in augmented-reality software, which is actually currently used by a wide range of companies, including IKEA.

So, the technology is found in virtual product showrooms and in manuals by retailers. The terms of the buy were not revealed at this point, so it is yet to discover how much Apple paid for this company.

So, with the new purchase, Apple managed to confirm the supposition that it is working on augmented reality, although the famous company has never revealed anything officially.

Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans," the famous company claimed.
According to reports, Metaio's shares were transferred to Apple on May 21.

Following the purchase, all Metaio products became unavailable.
Metaio products and subscriptions are no longer available for purchase. Downloads of your previous purchases will be available until December 15th, 2015, and active cloud subscriptions will be continued until expiration. Email support will continue until June 30th, 2015, the message shared on the company's website indicated.

TechCrunch reported that the purchase came as a shock for Metaio's clients, who had no idea that the company was planning such a move.

Of course, a series of rumors emerged immediately after the purchase was announced, indicating why Apple would be interested in this company and how it could help the tech giant.

Some reports indicated that Apple was working on augmented reality features for its Maps app.
The purpose is to allow users to point their phones at a street and just see what businesses are around.
Analysts claimed that at least for this app, the new purchase and Mataio technology can turn out being useful.

However, without a doubt, Apple's plans are not limited to that. Apple is not the only tech giant who has shown interest in this technology, as many other companies seemed to be willing to invest in augmented technology.
