Russian agents hacked Yahoo
More and more interesting news are popping out in the Yahoo hacking case. These days, the Justice Department charged two Russian intelligence officers, accusing them of stealing data from 500 million Yahoo accounts in 2014.
This will definitely make things worse between the American and Russian authorities on cybersecurity.
It seems that the Russian government used the information obtained from Yahoo by the intelligence officers to spy on a range of targets, including people from the White House, executives at banks, military officials, an airline company, two American cloud computing companies and a gambling regulator in Nevada.
Moreover, the federal prosecutors are claiming that the stolen data was also used to spy on Russian government officials and business executives.
As we know, the Russians were accused several times for other cyberattacks on the United States.
The most notable was the theft of emails last year from the Democratic National Committee.
But, it is worth mentioning that this is the first time in the Yahoo case when federal prosecutors have brought cybercrime charges against Russian intelligence officials.
In this case, we are talking about Dmitry Aleksandrovich Dokuchaev and Igor Anatolyevich Suschim, who worked for an arm of Russia’s Federal Security Service. The two allegedly directed the scheme and helped the criminal hackers remain untraceable.
The other two persons that are accused include a Russian hacker already indicted in connection with three other computer network intrusions.
The other hacker is a Kazash national living in Canada. It is important to know that one of the hackers also conducted an extensive spamming operation and stole credit card information.
However, we also must say that these hackers also deceived Yahoo users into buying erectile dysfunction drugs from a particular pharmacy.
One of these Russian intelligence agents indicted in the Yahoo case was arrested in early December. We are talking about Mr. Dokuchaev, who was reportedly a former hacker recruited to work in the F.S.B. at least seven years ago.
It seems that he and another fellow officer were accused of treason for passing secret information to the United States. But, United States officials declared that they are not sure if the Dmitry Dokuchaev arrested last year is the same man as the one named in the indictment.
Yahoo unveiled the stolen data in September and declared that it is working with law enforcement authorities to trace the hackers.
Yahoo also declared that the hackers were able to use the stolen information, which included encrypted passwords and personal data, to create a tool that gave them access to 30 million accounts over a period of two years.
